Work experience
Ioannis Karounis is Performer, Performance maker, Researcher of performing arts since 2002. He is also a Filmmaker, with a keen interest in video and documentaries, and co-founder and co-artistic director of the International Dance Film Festival "Athens Video Dance Project" (www.avdp.gr) since 2010. He has graduated from Fontys University in Tilburg (Master of Arts – "Performing public space") and studied dance at Jacob's Pillow Dance School (Massachusetts), the National School of Dance (Greece) and the Kontaxaki Professional Dance School (Greece). He also studied performance art at the University of Athens. He has collaborated with national and international artists, institutions and festivals worldwide, including Marina Abramovic and MAI, NEON Organization, Benaki Museum, National Museum of Contemporary Art (Greece), National Theater of Norway, Niarchos Foundation, Documenta 14 (Athens/Kassel), stART – Robert Bosch Stiftung, David Dorfman Company, XVII Festival International de Danza Contemporanea (Mexico), 14th Art Laguna Prize (Venice), Kalamata International Dance Festival (Greece), Athens & Epidaurus Festival, National Theater of Greece, International Dance Festival of South Korea, Hostscena Festival (Alesund-Norway), Hellenic Dance Company, Biennale Athens AB5to6, Echo Echo Dance Festival (Ireland), Off Europa Festival (Germany), Arc for Dance International Festival, Greek Contemporary Dance Platform, Dance Days Chania (Greece), Black Box International Theatre and Dance Festival (Bulgaria). He is a founding member of the SaLtaTor Physical Dance Group. His work has been funded by foundations, the Greek Ministry of Culture and private sponsorships.

Additionally, Ioannis Karounis as a filmmaker established AVDP_tv, one of the creative sectors of the Athens Video Dance Project. AVDP_tv records artists' works during their preparation and presents them as short documentaries. The main goal of AVDP_tv is to showcase to the public the creative process, opinions, and methods of renowned artists from Greece and abroad. These documentaries illustrate how fundamental forms of art transition into performance Art.
